Efficient Control of A-C Machines in the Brushless D-C Configuration
James R. Woodbury
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation > 1977 > IECI-24 > 1 > 13 - 23
This paper derives and analyzes equivalent circuit models of induction and synchronous motors. Optimal control algorithms and torque limits are derived for both motors. It is shown that the use of these algorithms leads to achieving high efficiency with either type of motor over a range of operating conditions that includes order-of-magnitude changes in both torque and speed. This is an important...

Inwas: Interfacing With Asynchronous Serial Mode
David G. Larsen, Peter R. Rony, Jonathan A. Titus
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation > 1977 > IECI-24 > 1 > 2 - 12
Interfacing can be defined as the joining of members of a group (such as people, instruments) in such a way that they are able to function in a compatible and coordinated fashion [1]. A knowledge of interfacing fundamentals has become mandatory only recently, with the advent of digital electronics and the marketing of a wide variety of digital instruments with divergent input and output requirements...

Low Order Rational Approximations To The Delay Operator
Robert E. Scott
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation > 1977 > IECI-24 > 1 > 61 - 65
Consideration is given to three rational approximants to the delay operator including the Pade approximants. The Pade approximants, in general, give rise to unstable system performance and, hence, are not satisfactory. The second approximant arises from a direct solution of systems with delay. The third is of the form (1 + sT)<R>N</R>. Low-order approximants of either of the later two...

Speed Control by Phase-Locked Servo Systems -- New Possibilities and Limitations
Jacob Tal
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation > 1977 > IECI-24 > 1 > 118 - 125
The operation of phase-locked servo systems is described and a linear discrete model is developed to describe their behavior. This model explains the observed phenomenon that the system becomes unstable at low speeds. Also discussed are the design problems, speed variations, and the extension of lock range by lag-lead networks.

Power Factor of Thyristor-Controlled Loads with Sinusoidal Supply Voltage and Integral-Cycle Triggering
P. J. Gallagher, T. G. Bland, William Shepherd
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation > 1977 > IECI-24 > 1 > 92 - 96
A single-phase, thyristor-controlled resistive or series resistance-inductance load, with sinusoidal supply voltage, has a power factor that can be attributed to a combination of active, reactive (displacement) and distortion voltamperes.

Steady State Error - Classical Solution
George L. Kramerich
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation > 1977 > IECI-24 > 1 > 97 - 99
The relationship between steady state error and system type is presented in terms of the classical solution of ordinary differential equations. The addition of integrators in the forward path to obtain zero steady state error is described in terms of changes in the structure of the closed loop differential equation. Ordinary differential equation structural characteristics which yield zero steady...

A Solid State, Variable-Frequency, 3-Phase Power Source With Individual Harmonic Control
D. A. G. Pedder, A. M. Issawi, H. R. Bolton
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation > 1977 > IECI-24 > 1 > 100 - 108
The paper describes a novel 3-phase transistor power inverter distinguished by its capability for obtaining from a constant voltage d. c. supply, 3-phase variable-frequency, variable-voltage power containing controlled amounts of 5th, 7th and 11th harmonics. The phase relations between fundamental and harmonic components are identical in each of the three phases; amplitudes can be controlled independently.

A Comparison of the Smith Predictor and Optimal Design Approaches for Systems with Delay in the Control
John F. Donoghue
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation > 1977 > IECI-24 > 1 > 109 - 117
The relatively recent application of optimal control theory to the design of control systems for processes with delay has made available an alternative design approach to the classical Smith Predictor approach. Although the designs resulting from the two approaches have many features in common, there are also important differences, and neither the similarities or differences have been examined in...

Digital Processing of Differential Transducer Signals
Earle W. Owen
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation > 1977 > IECI-24 > 1 > 85 - 91
A method is described for digitally processing two frequencies produced by placing a pair of differential transducers in parameter controlled oscillators. For frequencies that are either directly or inversely related to the measured variable, the output count is proportional to the measured variable. The method does not rely on the accuracy of an external clock, but instead uses the two frequencies...

Electromagnetic Processes in AC/DC Power Converters: Part I -- General Equations of AC-DC AND/OR DC-AC Power Converters for Steady-State and Transient Processes
Michael A. Slonim
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation > 1977 > IECI-24 > 1 > 50 - 56
In this series of articles, an attempt is made to find and to discover a mathematical method for analysis of the electromagnetic processes in ac-dc and/or dc-ac converters. This method based on the application of difference equations, makes it possible to describe the behaviour of converters in steady-state and transient processes. Analysis is applied to full-wave and half-wave power converters regardless...

Simple Adaptive Analog and Digital Trigger Circuits for Thyristors Working Under Wide Range of Supply Frequencies
S. Murugesan, C. Kameswara Rao
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation > 1977 > IECI-24 > 1 > 46 - 49
Simple adaptive analog and digital trigger circuits for thyristors working under variable frequency supply voltage are presented in this paper. These circuits adopt themselves to generate trigger pulses such that the firing angle depends only on the control signal and is independent of the supply frequency. The digital trigger circuits described here directly control the firing angle depending upon...

The Application of Hill-Climbing Methods to the Adaptive Control of Small-Scale Practical Systems
Norman M. Levy
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation > 1977 > IECI-24 > 1 > 74 - 80
Adaptive control problems are frequently considered from a purely theoretical point of view. Here, an attempt has been made to apply hill-climbing methods to the control of four small-scale practical systems. The hill-climbing methods are the perturbation method and a simpler ' no-perturbation' method developed by the author.

IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation > 1977 > IECI-24 > 1 > 39 - 45
Output voltage, output current and line current waveforms in a symmetrically pulse width modulated (SPWM) ac chopper are analyzed for harmonic content, displacement factor, distortion factor, power factor and efficiency. The results are compared with those of phase controlled ac chopper circuit to assess the superiority of SPWM ac chopper. A novel SPWM ac chopper with minimum number of active components...

IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Control Instrumentation > 1977 > IECI-24 > 1 > 24 - 29
In this paper, a new scheme for static Scherbius drives, which results in improvement of power factor of the drive, has been proposed. It has a chopper inserted between the rectifier and inverter modules. The design considerations of such a scheme have been discussed in detail. The experimental results on a Scherbius drive using the proposed scheme have also been presented in order to bring out its...
