McLaren’s Lando Norris beat Red Bull’s Max Verstappen with help from the safety car to take his maiden Formula 1 victory at the Miami Grand Prix.

Norris jumped to the front because he was able to make his pit stop when a safety car was deployed at about half distance while others had already stopped.

Verstappen was unable to keep pace with Norris when the race restarted with 27 laps to go, and the Briton stretched ahead, while the world champion had to settle for second ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

In addition to a bit of luck and timing, Norris’ victory was based on genuine pace - he was the quickest car on track once he was released from behind the struggling Red Bull of Sergio Perez when the Mexican made an early pit stop for tyres on lap 17.

"He's got one more thing now hasn't he, world champion next."

  4. Post update

Daddy Norris, Adam, is chatting on Sky Sports via a video link. "It's been a long journey," he says as he beams from ear to ear watching the footage of his son celebrating his first F1 victory.

Daniil Kvyat, the original torpedo, named so by Sebastian Vettel for his antics at the Russian Grand Prix in 2016, is referenced by Carlos Sainz in his post-race interview with Sky Sports. "Everyone was racing hard out there today," says the Ferrari driver. "First Checo at the start, like they say in the old school days with Seb, he came like a torpedo and nearly took us all with him into Turn One."

  10. 'P3 was the best we could do and we will be satisfied with that' - Leclerc

Charles Leclerc finished in third after starting in second,he said: “I didn’t have a great start. As soon as I left the clutch I had wheelspin, I saw Checo on the right but there was very little grip so he locked upand I thought we would crash, but fortunately for everybody we all got out thatfirst corner without any damage, then it was all about trying to focus onourselves but today we were again missing a little bit of pace.

“We did our best obviously, we had been unlucky with thesafety car and the timing of the safety car wasn’t great for us, but we managedeverything quite well and P3 was the best we could do and we will be satisfiedwith that.

“I’m really happy for Lando, he deserves it. Very often hehas been very close for it one way of another and he didn’t make it but todayhe did an incredible job and for the whole weekend he has been on it.”

  11. 'It wasn't our strongest weekend' - Verstappen

Red Bull's MaxVerstappen who finished second at the Miami Grand Prix: "You win, you lose. We're all used to that in racing. Today was already quite tricky. The medium tyres didn't feel fantastic. Once we made a pitstop, I heard the lap times the McLarens were doing and thought 'wow, they're quick'.

"The hard tyres had more pace. Lando was flying. It was incredibly hard for us in that stint. If a bad day is P2, I'll take it.

"I'm very happy for Lando, it's been a long time coming and it's not gonna be his last one. He definitely deserves it today.

"Understeer, oversteer, there was very low grip on four wheels, It's something we have to understand.

[On whether this is true McLaren pace]: "I hope not!

"They came with upgrades. It wasn't our strongest weekend. We'll analyse it all and come back stronger."

  12. 'I stuck with McLaren because I believed in them and today proved exactly that' - Norris

Lando Norris, who has been at McLaren since 2019, had a few words for his team. He said: “What do I say to them huh? I’m just proud really, I mean a lot of people doubted me along the way, I’ve made a lot of mistakes over the last five years, my short career but today we put it altogether so this is all for the team. I stuck with McLaren because I believed in them and today proved exactly that.”

  14. From zero to hero

I think Lando Norris is going to be camped on that podium for a while yet.

How things can change in 24 hours. On Saturday, he was bumped out of the sprint with only a few seconds on the clock.

Today, he gets to call himself a Grand Prix winner for McLaren.

Shall we have a look at what the top three had to say?

  15. Champagne moment

Here's the champagne. The crowd want the bang - and they get it! I think Lando Norris was a bit impaired, however, as two bottles of the fizzy stuff had just been sprayed straight into his eyes by Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen.

  16. Norris takes top step

The number one driver in Miami reaches the top step of the podium for the first time in his career.

God Save the King is played out as Lando Norris salutes his team below. He's now presented with the winner's trophy and instantly throws it up in the air. Careful!

  17. Podium celebrations

What a picture. The whole of the McLaren team are now waiting below the podium for Lando Norris to come out. He's still sitting on the floor in the cooldown room, chatting with Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc about what happened during the race.

That is a mega podium. Leclerc is out first. Now Verstappen. And then....

  18. Post update

The golf buggy is on hand to deliver race winner Lando Norris to the podium. "What a drive, the car was great," McLaren CEO Zak Brown tells Sky Sports while in the pit lane.

  19. 'Lando was flying' - Verstappen

Max Verstappen may not have won this race, but the Dutchman is still in good spirits when he steps up to the microphone, noting Lando Norris was "flying" in the McLaren. "He definitely deserves it," the world champion adds.

  20. Norris wins Miami Grand Prix

Everybody is coming up to Lando Norris to congratulate the McLaren driver on his first victory. The Briton then does the biggest stage dive into his team, getting swallowed up in the jubilant scenes as the crowd cheers wildly.

That's been a long time coming for the 24-year-old. He slips an F-bomb into his post-race interview with Jenson Button, but we can forgive that.
